人力车夫还会利用某种机会趁机索要高得离谱的价钱。比如，当客人结束拜访起身回府时，热心的主人出于习惯会为其雇一辆车。除非客人不在场时主人已谈好价钱，否则车夫会要价很高，因为他们非常了解主人不会在客人面前讨价还价。常常有这样的情形：客人一定要自己付钱，然后主人与客人出于礼节“抢着”付钱。这时，车夫当然趁势索要高价。
在法租界，一位名为阿桂姐的女流氓和她的儿子马鸿根自二十世纪二十年代后做了很多年的“粪霸”......阿桂姐是二三十年代上海滩三大亨之一黄金荣（1868—1953）的情妇，这层关系使她能够垄断该项业务。
亭子间常常成为上海许多受过教育的年轻人的家。这些年轻人不少是来自乡下小镇，留在上海工作（多数从事文学、新闻出版和教育方面的职业）。他们的收入使他们只租得起亭子间。
