莱昂内尔·特里林(Lionel Trilling, 1905-1975)，20世纪美国著名批评家，生前为美国哥伦比亚大学著名教授。他继承阿诺德、利维斯以来的批评传统，侧重从社会历史、道德心理的角度评论文学和文化，被称为20世纪中期美国年青一代的思想导师，对当代批评影响甚大。其代表作还有《自由的想象》、《弗洛伊德与我们的文化危机》、《反对自我》、《超越文化》等。

到1899年的时候，我们现在随便说说的那种工作伦理是有些疲乏了。但是，它还没有彻底失去一个世纪以来曾作用于英国人的那种伟大力量。在国家生活中，忠实地履行职责、愉快地开展工作的思想就是文明准则本身。在个人生活中，这种准则保证了英国人最引以为自豪的那种特性——真诚，而真诚就是指他们与事情、与双方、与自身的专一关系。
黑格尔拒绝诚实的灵魂，因为它是由它与外部社会权力及那种权力之精神的高贵关系来界定、限制的。高贵意识在狄德罗/我那里已经资产阶级化了，但其含义却没有发生根本的改变。而我认为，当下至少是作为读者的我们基本上是与黑格尔的评价保持一致的。我们拒绝古老的贵族生活幻想，因为我们想脱离它所强加给我们的限制性条件。
用《哈姆雷特》中的波洛涅斯的话来说，真诚就是“对你自己忠实”，就是让社会中的“我”与内在的“自我”相一致。因此，唯有出现了社会需要我们扮演的“角色”之后，个体真诚与否才会成为一个值得追问的问题。
比之于“真诚”，“真实”要求更繁重的道德经验，更苛刻的自我认识，对“忠实于它”是指什么有更严格的理解，它更关注外部世界和人在其中的位置，但却不会轻易地屈从于社会生活环境。
