作者简介
伊莱恩·肖瓦尔特(E1aine showalter)，美国著名女性主义批评家，普林斯顿大学荣休教授，曾任美国现代语文学会(MLA)会长。作为女作家批评(gynocriticism)的开创者之一，她从二十世纪六七十年代起就致力于发现女作家传统这个被淹没的“亚特兰蒂斯岛”， 写出了《她们自己的文学》等著作和大量文章，坚持从历史和文化的角度研究女性文学和探讨女性文学理论；近700页的新作Ⅸ女性文学评判人》(A Jury of Her Peers，2009)，更是首部整理和分析350年来美国女性作品的文学史巨著，具有里程碑意义。

简和罗切斯特的婚姻基本上是两人平等的结合，但是女性小说中的男女能取得平等，靠的是互相顺应对方的局限，而不是允许各自有成长空间，比翼双飞。
