库尔提乌斯（Ernst Robert Curtius, 1886-1956），德国文献学家、罗曼语言与文学批评家。生于德国坦恩（Thann），曾游历德国、瑞士、英格兰等地，1904年起在波恩学习梵文和比较文献学。1913年，他提交了大学教师资格论文——论述十九世纪法国批评家布吕内蒂埃（Ferdinand Brunetière）的文章，并因此成了编外教师（Privatdozent），不久在波恩又荣升副教授。1920年，他在马尔堡出任大学教授，1924年，前往海德堡任职。五年后，他返回波恩，接替著名的语言史专家吕布克（Meyer-Lübke），担任罗曼文献学教授，直至退休。1956年，库氏于罗马逝世。著有《岌岌可危的德国精神》（Deutscher Geist in Gefahr）、《新法兰西的文学先锋》（Die literarischen Wegbereiter des neuen Frankreich）、《欧洲文学与拉丁中世纪》（Europäische Literatur und Lateinisches Mittelalter）等，其中《欧洲文学与拉丁中世纪》是文学批评领域的经典之作，几十年来畅行不衰，给他带来了广泛的声誉。

羅馬詩人喜歡把寫作比為航海。“寫文章”就是“揚帆起航，航行”（“vela dare”:Virgil，Georgics，II，41）。當文章行將結束，船帆便會收起來（“vela trahere”:ibid，IV，117）。史詩詩人乘坐大船，在開闊的海面上乘風破浪，抒情詩人則坐著小舟，在江河中隨風漂流。（第162頁）
他甚至把特洛伊人里菲乌斯安到了朱庇特的天宫（Par., XX, 68）。
