雷蒙德∙卡佛（1938-1988），美国当代著名短篇小说家、诗人。被称为“美国二十世纪下半叶最重要的小说家”和小说界“简约主义”的大师，是“继海明威之后美国最具影响力的短篇小说作家”。《伦敦时报》在他去世后称他为“美国的契诃夫”。他被认为是美国八十年代后短篇小说复兴的最大功臣。
卡佛19岁高中毕业后，即娶妻养家，艰难谋生。人生的前半部分，在失业、酗酒、破产中度过，妻离子散，只能在贫困潦倒中坚持写作。
70年代后卡佛的写作成就渐受瞩目，1979年获古根海姆奖金，并两次获国家艺术基金奖金；1983年获米尔德瑞──哈洛斯特劳斯终生成就奖；1985年获《诗歌》杂志莱文森奖；1988年被提名为美国艺术文学院院士，并获哈特弗大学荣誉文学博士学位，同时获布兰德斯小说奖。
