内容简介
本书综合介绍了语法化这一概念。在语法化过程中，词汇术语和结构出现的某种语言语境中具有语法功能，而一旦其本身发生语法化，就会继续发展出新的语法功能。因此，名词和动词会随着时间变化而充当不同的语法成分，如格的标志、句子的连接词以及助词。作者在本书中涉及了包括历史语言学、话语分析和语用学在内的多个语言领域，数据取自多种语言，包括埃维语、芬兰语、法语、印地语、赫梯语、日语、马来语和英语，其中尤以英语为主。
本书为第二版，根据十年间出现的最新理论和方法问题对第一版进行了彻底的修订，并且增加了详细的参考书目。本书还着重探讨了当今学术界对语言混合过程中语法化的变化的方向以及语法化的作用等问题的不同见解。

作者简介
鲍尔·J·霍伯尔 （JPAUL J. HOPPER ）是卡内基梅隆大学人文学科的杰出教授，他出版的著作有《语法化学说》（与Elizabeth Closs Traugott合作，剑桥大学出版社，1993年）、《语法简述》（1999年）、《语法化的限制》（与Anna GuacaloneRamat合编，1998年）、《频率与语言结构的产生》（与Joan Bybee合编，2001年）。
伊丽莎白·克劳丝·特拉格特（ELIZABETH CLOSS TRAUGOTT）是斯坦福大学语言学系和英语系教授。她出版的著作有《英语历史句法》（1972年）、《文学学生的语言学》（与Mary L. Pratt合作，1980年）、《语法化学说》（与Paul J. Hopper合作，剑桥大学出版社，1993年）、《语义变化的规则性》（与Richard B. Dasher合作，剑桥大学出版社，2001年）。
