美國小說家，創造出著名的「克蘇魯」神話體系。他的怪奇小說（Weird fiction）發展出一套「宇宙主義」（Cosmicism），認為宇宙中沒有可識別的神靈，人類在那些無名、也無法形容的龐大力量前微不足道。
洛夫克拉夫特出生於羅德島州首府普洛威頓斯，自幼便展現文學天賦，卻健康不佳。洛氏對怪奇小說的興趣來自童年時外公為其編述的歌德恐怖故事；父親在他三歲時因梅毒而精神失常，母親在他近三十歲時因抑鬱症被送進同一間醫院，親族的悲慘遭遇加上身心疾患與求學挫折，造就了他陰鬱的創作風格。他最多產的時期是生命的最後十年；1936年他被診斷出小腸癌，並在隔年逝世。洛氏死後，著作才開始受到重視。當代恐怖大師史蒂芬．金認為他是「二十世紀最偉大的古典恐怖故事作家」。
