如果说后现代性是建立在富足的基础上的，那么后稀缺的情境要想维持，也只能通过故意拒绝接受包容他人的诉求。某些社会群体的后现代性要想维持，就只能以作为潜在竞争者的其他群体持续困于稀缺境况为代价。换句话说，只有那些被排斥在后现代境况之外的群体再生产出必不可少的终有一朽的生产，后现代境况才能再生产其不朽的消费。
实际上，购买高保真音响或洗碗机之类的东西，算不上摆脱困境。资本主义的物品消费并不能买来自由。恰恰相反，那些东西属于资本主义的形式，就此而言，消费这些东西，其实就是更深地陷入囚笼。
过一种后现代的日子，就要活在一种无视之中，无视现代性的教益，尤其是卡夫卡的教益：希望的前提条件就在于，所希望的东西是无法抵达的。活出后现代的生命，就是要活在一种真理之中：其实，唯一比未能实现希望还要糟糕的事情，就是实现希望。
